Satellite imagery

Satellite remote sensing enables to collect multispectral images, of visible and close-to-infrared areas. Image processing enables to classify units (pixels) quickly, according to procedures adapted to each theme developed. On land, these images are mainly used for important operational plant (fauna) monitoring.

In marine zones, despite a lack of visibility due to weather conditions, the main restrictions come from (i.) the decrease in sunlight penetration far beneath the water surface, (ii.) the possibility to receive images at low tide and (iii.) resolution.

SPOT is one of the satellites mostly used. It makes possible to shot images of low tides along the Atlantic Ocean and Western English Channel coastlines. Along the eastern coasts of Côtes-d’Armor, and taking into consideration the satellite real-time flight over the area, the tidal flat cannot be observed during spring tides. A pixel size corresponds to a square of 20 to 10 meters on side, on land. One operational application concerns the evaluation of the rate of algal cover in tidal zone.
