In the coastal circalittoral zone, the environmental variability is low (mainly variations in seasonal temperatures below 10°C). The bedrocks provide shelter for only shade-loving species (which tolerate faint light conditions). The vegetal cover is usually poor. The attached fauna is composed of hydractinia, bryozaires, sponges, etc. (especially along the English Channel coastline).
