Why should the benthos be monitored ?

Coastal benthic species are permanent control species of the environment, because they integrate local ecological features, due to natural fluctuations or generated by human activities. Changes in the coastal marine environment, and particularly in the benthic compartment, are growing, and it is necessary to develop a long term benthic monitoring network, in order to assess the consequences and to produce management strategies.
