The development of tidal zones is one of the characteristics of the French coastlines along the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Benthic organisms are vertically distributed according to their capacity to withstand environmental fluctuations: duration of emersion, intensity and duration of light, etc, determined by tidal cycles. L1 : level of mean spring tides
L2 : level of mean neap tides
L3 : limit compatible with the life of photophile* algae
L4 : limit compatible with the life of shade-loving** algae
* "Photic": coastal zone where live fixed chlorophyll plants, and where sea floors receive sunlight from the water surface.
** "Photophile": organism that needs sunlight to grow.
*** "Shade-loving": organism that needs very little sunlight to grow.
